Tuff Gong
Musicians: Sly Dunbar, Robbie Lyn, Harry T, Winston 'Bo Peep' Bowen, 'Chinna' Smith
The final recording session featured some of Jamaica’s top musicians playing together live inside the Gong’s studio.
As Harry J’s engineer Stephen Stewart prepared the session for the all-star band, cameras took positions and Handel moved effortlessly from the control board to the piano to vibe with his fellow musicians: Sly Dunbar, Robbie Lyn, Harry T, Winston ‘Bo Pee’ Bowen and Chinna Smith.
How long it took these maestros to set up and learn the rhythm, melody and chord progressions? 10 minutes.
How often you get to see a live in-studio jazz improv from some of Jamaica's finest musicians? Hmmm. Once in a lifetime?
Some things you can't pay for, and this was one of them. This live session was the epitome of talent and professionalism. By take two the session was a wrap. The third time they played the song was supposed to have been just for the cameras to get some live footage. But when the music hit, they continued playing variations of the theme leading with guitars and piano.
The enraptured audience (production crew, camera crew and a small group of French tourists who happened to be visiting Tuff Gong at just the right time) gathered round and watched as Sly set the pace; Chinna's guitar sang; Harry T's fundeh drums pumped out a heartbeat; 'Bo Peep's guitar rhythm bounced while Robbie Lyn led the group toward new ground like the Pied Piper himself.
The session ended with toasts and a class photo of the Listen 2 the Call all stars.
Technology will facilitate the input of the bassline from Riddim Twin Robbie Shakespeare who could not physically attend the session and additional strings will be added to complete the session for the remix album.
Here endeth the fun part... Now the real work begins.
